This itinerary is built for traveler who want the Himalayas beyond the usual Shimla–Manali circuit — a road trip that moves through the Parvati Valley's riverside charm, the quiet pine-forested lanes of the Tirthan Valley, and finally onto the high-altitude Manali–Leh Highway for a crossing into the cold desert landscape of Sarchu.

The journey begins with an overnight Volvo departure from Delhi into Kasol, the heart of the Parvati Valley, known for its café culture, riverside walks, and easy access to Manikaran Sahib's hot springs. From here, the route turns offbeat toward Jibhi in the Tirthan Valley — a quieter hill hamlet of wooden houses and forest walks — before continuing via Kullu into Manali, where a full day covers the Hadimba Temple, Old Manali's lanes, and Solang Valley or Vashisht's hot springs.

The trip's centerpiece is the high-altitude push to Sarchu, crossing Rohtang Pass and Baralacha La along the Manali–Leh Highway to reach the vast plains of Sarchu at roughly 14,000 ft, followed by the return crossing back to Manali. The final day is left open for leisure and recovery in Manali before boarding the overnight Volvo back to Delhi.

Ideal for: road trip enthusiasts, high-altitude travel seekers, photographers, offbeat Himachal explorers, and small groups looking for a mix of leisure valleys and an adventurous mountain crossing.

Other Info

Altitude & Sarchu

  • Sarchu sits at approximately 14,000 ft — carry warm layers even in September, as nights turn cold.
  • Acclimatize where possible; avoid overexertion on arrival and stay well hydrated on both crossing days.
  • Keep basic altitude sickness medication on hand and be aware of the nearest medical point along the highway.
  • Any symptoms of altitude sickness should be reported immediately to the driver/guide.

Road & Weather

  • Rohtang Pass and Baralacha La can be unpredictable in September — road status should be checked on the morning of both Sarchu drives.
  • Both Manali–Sarchu legs should start early to cross high passes before afternoon weather changes.
  • Fuel up in Manali before departure, as options are limited beyond Keylong.
  • The itinerary and drive timings may be adjusted for safety in case of landslides, road closures, or adverse weather on the Manali–Leh Highway.

Packing

  • Layered clothing: light wear for Kasol/Jibhi, heavier thermals for the Sarchu nights.
  • Power bank, offline maps, and sufficient cash — connectivity is patchy beyond Manali.
  • Comfortable footwear for the Kasol/Chalal and Jibhi walks.

Bookings to Confirm

  • Both Volvo legs (Delhi–Kasol departure and Manali–Delhi return) should be confirmed well in advance, especially in peak season.
  • Stays in Kasol, Jibhi, and Manali (two separate night bookings) require confirmation.
  • Sarchu camp stay and local vehicle/permit arrangements for the Manali–Leh Highway stretch must be arranged ahead of the trip.

General Advisory

  • Given the high-altitude and remote nature of the Sarchu leg, travelers with pre-existing heart, lung, or blood pressure conditions should consult a doctor before undertaking this trip.
  • Travel insurance covering high-altitude travel is strongly recommended.
  • Mobile network connectivity is limited or unavailable beyond Manali on the Sarchu route.
